Possible events in track &field?

I am going to join track %26amp; field, and I know the coach will help me chose events, but I just would like to have some possiblities in mind before I join.


I am...


1. A freshman girl


2. 5'6'' 125 pounds


3. Made varsity soccer as a left forward








Any ideas? Also, I would love to hear about the event a bit as well.


Any information would be appreciated

Possible events in track %26amp;field?
You are a freshman so, assuming your coach will permit it, take advantage of your new position with the team and try as many events as you can over the season. You may find unexpected talent in an area you hadn't explored. You may have to practice with different groups on different days, but you should take this time to find out what you are good at. Once you know you can spend your remaning years perfecting your specialty.
Reply:I am not going to suggest an event, since many have done that, and with that build you could do almost any event, but I am going to make another suggestion:





Consider running with your Jr. High team instead of your Senior High team if you have that option.





Since you are in 9th grade and new to track, if you have above average ability you will be a star on the Jr. High team, but on the High school team you may be what is called an "extra," or a person who runs but does not count in the scoring. You will be competing with 7th, 8th, and 9th graders on the Jr. High team, but you will be competing with 12th through 9th on the Senior High team.





Last year my daughter, a 9th grader, ran with the Jr. High team. They made her a co-captain, and each week she improved her times until she was the number one girl in the 1600. If she had run on the Senior High team, she would have been and "extra" all season, and might have gotten discouraged. As it was she had a great year, and had a lot of fun. Her friends that "went up" did OK, but didn't really have as much fun.

Reply:There are lots of different events. 100, 200, 400 meters for sprinters, 800, 1500 meters for distance (In NYS, I don't think girls' track runs the 3000m), relays, Field events, high jump, long jump. Try them all and see which ones you are best at.
Reply:Try the long jump, it will be good even if you don't have super speed right now if you keep doing it, by senior yr you'll be great. Try also the 200/400m you have the endurance and speed from soccer, maybe the 400h, you jumped over tackling players feet and legs in soccer, and you have coordination from soccer, the hurdles are low and you have distance to get in a stride pattern.
Reply:Your background sounds a lot like mine. I played soccer and then transitioned into running. Your height and weight is the same as mine - I am older though. But I run long distances and when I was in school I did very well. Try out different events and decide what you like and what you have a knack for, but I have a feeling it will be the longer distances - 800, mile, 2 mile. In college I mainly ran the steeple chase - very fun, but hard work!


FYI- if you do want to run the longer distances I suggest you get out there and start running now so you have a good base, otherwise it will be pretty hard come March.

your soccer background will give you an edge in sprinting, but you probably have a good endurance for distance events too. Have your coach look at your running stride to see which would be better for you.
Reply:200 yard sprint, pole vault, long jump, maybe shot put
Reply:if you can jump high then do triple jump or long jump or high jump


if you run fast or long distance do like the mile or the 100m dash
Reply:With your size you could probably do a various of events?? If you are fast try the 100 or 200? If your fast and have endurance try the 400 or 800 meters. In the field events try the long jump or pole vault.


Talk with your coach and try these events and see what your good at. The coach will also pick what is best for you!!! Good Luck!!!
Reply:Being a freshman you iwll probably get to try out a lot of the events so they can see what your best at. I'm not sure which you perfer...sprints or long distance. I did sprints in track and my favorite event was the 200 meter dash. It's not too short nor too long, it's perfect. Another event that is in the middle of sprinting and long distance is the 400. I think this is the hardest event, it's almost impossible to sprint the whole thing but to be any good you have to. It's very tiring! So first I would say you have to figure out if you're a sprinter or distance runner, after that the events should jsut fall into place. both have relays which I loved to be in. It's nice to have three other people there with you running the race as a team. Good Luck!
