Why dont schools teach current events at a required class?

Events such as 911 and the recent slaying of Pakastani leader are events that children should be required to learn. Wouldnt it be great to hear a child talk about these events. Who really remembers what they learned in History clas 9-12 grade anyway? I know that in some high schools Current Events classes are optional, but i believe they should be required.

Why dont schools teach current events at a required class?
Ok, you lost me here. Why do you think it's the responsibility of a TEACHER to see that your child hears or reads the news? Teachers have enough to do without having to take on responsibilities of being parents to 150 kids as well. What's wrong with YOU sitting down with your child, or talking about the news they see on TV? Do your job, and let teachers do THEIRS.

Edit: Yes, I talk this way in real life, yes; I call it as I see it, and it appears to me that you want teachers to do the job of keeping kids informed, when it should be parents. I didn't say anything negative about you, so I can only assume that you're defensive because I hit a nerve.

Thank you, Fernella; you said it better than I did. Our dear asker needs to see to her own children, in my opinion.
Reply:Some teachers put them inside a required class.

Other high schools offer Debate classes where these topics may be discussed.
Reply:That's what the news is for.
Reply:well im not too sure what country you ar from but hear in England when you go into year 10 and pick your GCSE you ca take Citizenship which discusses these events.
Reply:okay, let's see, you're someone's mommmy but you want teachers to keep him au courant about world news, in addition to

Math, English, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Teen Living, Sports, Foreign Languages, Health, Driver's Ed, Drug Ed., Sex Ed., Civics, Music, Character Education; did I leave anything out?
Reply:I agree with you 100%. In my high school history classes, ALL of my history teachers required a current events report to be turned in weekly. We learned about history and stayed informed on current events. You should bring it up at your schools PTA meeting... maybe they will agree to try to incorporate it into the curriculum.
