What events are the book 'What Daddy Did' by Neal Shusterman based on?

I just finished this excellent book and I'd like to know what events the book is based on, seeing as I read in a review it is indeed based on true events.

What events are the book 'What Daddy Did' by Neal Shusterman based on?
"A few years back, I happened to come in touch with a family who was in the midst of struggling through a crisis. In short, a man had killed his wife, and the grandparents now had custody of the two children. Unfortunately this is a story we hear all too often -- but what made this one unique was the choice the grandparents made, to forgive the man who murdered their daughter, and to teach the children forgiveness. The story is not about the murder, but the healing that took place because of their choice to forgive, rather than to hate. In the end, everyone in the family was uplifted and redeemed by it. I felt is was such a testament to the power of love, faith, and forgiveness, that it had to be told."

It's a true story, but not a famous one.
